Commercial cyclists in Gisagara District have been urged to fully participate in the fight against drug abuse and other illegal substance.
While speaking to over 60 cyclists operating in Ndora trading centre on February 16, Inspector of Police (IP) Marie Chantal Uwambaye, the District Community Liaison Officer urged them to ensure they are the eyes and ears of their communities by reporting wrongdoers.
“Drug traffickers and those transporting illicit brew use you to transport the substance from one place to another. This implies that you can play a lead role in fighting these criminals by reporting them to the police,” IP Uwambaye told cyclists.
She added that these substances are very dangerous to the safety of individuals and when people are affected the entire community is affected.
“A drug addicts indulge in other criminal activities like theft or house break-ins and by doing away with drug use we will also be preventing other crimes including domestic and gender based violence it brings along,” she added.
She went on to explain the financial risks surrounding drug dealing saying that anyone caught is fined and also loses the money he or she invested in, on top of being imprisoned.
“Always be curious of the luggage or a passengers you carry and in any situation you see something suspicious you should hurriedly report to police,” she said.
The head of COTAVEGI, a cooperative of cyclists in Gisagara, Theogene Habyarimana thanked RNP for enlightening them about the dangers of drug abuse and pledged to work closely with the police in reporting offenders
