Police in Kirehe is hold two men who were caught trafficking 80kilograms of cannabis.

The suspects Jean Pierre Bizimugu and Valence Mukunzi were arrested in two separate police operations conducted in Mpanga Sector.

According to the Eastern Region Police Spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi one of the suspects, Bizimungu was arrested on the night of April 22 with 30kgs of cannabis while Mukunzi a commercial motorcyclist was arrested a day earlier carrying 50kgs of cannabis on his motorcycle RC 663P.

He warned against use and sell of narcotic drugs, adding that RNP has devised measures to crackdown on anyone involved.

The regional spokesperson warned the public and commercial motorcyclists against involvement and aiding trafficking of drugs, and appealed to them to instead partner with Police by reporting those involved in crime.

“We have continued to make repetitive appeals to the community to enhance partnership through community policing so as to fight crimes that might affect their daily activities, thus hindering national development,” he said.

He warned that drug abuse is the major cause of most crimes reported saying that to front  such crimes, Rwanda National Police has conducted several campaigns against drug trafficking and abuse.

Also, Police continues to call on local leaders, civil society and other stakeholders to work hand in hand to fight this illegal trade and consumption.

Use of cannabis may have the same effect on the brain as other drugs, causing a loss of motivation and behavioral problems. Chronic marijuana use may increase risks for mental illness such as anxiety disorder and depression among others.

under article 594 of the penal code, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500, 000 to Rwf5 million.
